Title | Divan-i Hafiz: a case study of a Persian manuscript in the sixteenth century's Bosnia |
Summary | Among Pesian manuscripts preserved in Bosnia, there is one particular and important manuscript of Divan-i Hafiz, identified as No. 1366 in The Gazi Husref - Bey Library in Sarajevo.It is illustrated with five miniatures and dated to the 16th century. The thesis examines this manuscript from the historical and art historical perspective. Using this manuscript as evidence for the intensive interest in Persian manuscripts among Bosnian population, it examines the circulation and use of Persian manuscripts in this former Ottoman province. By examining the holdings of private and public libraries, which existed in Ottoman Bosnia, it proves that works of Persian classics were collected and popular among the educated population in Bosnia. Starting with the circulation of the illustrated Persian manuscripts in the Ottoman Enpire, the thesis continues with the issue of Persian manuscripts focusing on Bosnia. Further, it explores gazel, the poetic form contained in Divan-i Hafiz, as a genre of the time and it's connection with sufism. Finally, the thesis analyses the miniatures form thsi manuscript: the technical description is followed by the text-image analysis. Considering the fact that the Diva-i Hafiz was conceived as a a volume of Islamic mystical poetry, it collated the miniatures of this manuscript with the text they are accompanied with and propoese two different readings of the images: a profane and a mystical one. |
