Title | Industrializing Albania During Communism Case Study: Elbasan 1960-1991 |
Summary | The communist leaders embarked on asiduos campaigns to reconstruct Albania throught the transformation of the economic country's profile from an agricultural-industrial into an indusrial-argicultural country, as the beligerent circumstances were desperate. Soviet Union was the exemplar on this. Consequently I have focused in the first chapter on the Soviet Models of industrialization implemented in Soviet Union, which later on would be implemented in Albania, after some theoretical and methodological consideration about industrialization during communism. The second chapter of this thesis is related to Albania and the project of industrialization. An overview of the economic circumstances of Albnia in the interwar period and then the transformation of the country after the communist takeover are the focus. The stages of industrialization are the concern of this chapter as well analyzed in terms of the achievements, the negative sides and the means of this transformation. The legislation of Albania related to industry is the focus as well. The third chapter is about a case study, Elbasan, working thus on a national and local level. The choise of this case study is due to the role of Elbasan during communism and the changes it underwent, becoming the most industrialized city of Albania where all the branches of industry were settled. The transformation is obvious through contrasting the interwar period industry to the communist one. The main industrial enterprises are analyzed as well, concluding with some remarks on the fate of these enterprises and Elbasan after the collapse of communism in Albania. Then the reflection of this transformation of the city in media and in the political arena follows. The final conclusions of the thesis reveal the main findings about this topic. Hence, Albania underwent a total transformation in terms of industrial aspect, following the Soviet example but all this at a high price, related to the lack of human rights, political repression and ecconomic waste. |
