Title Wage inequality and gender wage gap in Hungary, 1992-1997
Summary The aim of the paper is to investigate how wage inequality evolved in Hungary between 1992 and 1997 and what effect the composition of change in inequality may have on the estimation of gender wage gap. The change in the composition of the work force may lead to some bias in the estimation of the overall residual variance (spurious growth) and the residual variance free of this bias measured with Lemieux’s method (2006) is lower for both genders. According to my results this effect is stronger for women, which makes it probable that some components of gender wage gap decomposed with the Juhn-Murphy and Pierce (1993) method have different weights as usually assumed.
