Title | Nationalism as a response to legitimacy crises |
Summary | The general scope of the thesis is the relation between nationalism and political legitimacy on modern States. The text is mainly theoretical, but a short example is included. My hypothesis is the following: in order to become a mass movement, nationalism needs a proper social state of affairs on one side, and a legitimacy crisis of the existing political regime on the other. In these circumstances, the use of a nationalist agenda and discourse permits elites to attract popular support in their struggle for changing the regime. In order to probe that, I first make a review of the arguments by some authors of the "sociological stream" of studies on nationalism (Gellner, Anderson, Deutsch, Hroch). This is followed by a discussion on legitimacy of political regimes, mainly based on the work by David Beetham. Then, the analysis of the use of nationalism by political movements during situations of legitimacy crisis is made. This is supported by a short case of the breakup of Yugoslavia. Then, I end with some general conclusions. |
