Title AN IMPERIALIST HAWK: THE IMAGE OF ISRAEL IN SOVIET CARICATURES (1947-1987)
Summary This research focuses on the image of Israel as the enemy in Soviet caricatures. It examines how the stereotypical image of Israel in the Soviet official newspaper Pravda was created and how it was changing during the long period of Soviet-Israeli political confrontation. This research considers the significant changes in the depiction of Israel and ties it to the demands of the political situation. The paper also discusses the main themes of anti-Israeli caricature and the most important methods of visualizing the enemy, which were employed by Soviet caricaturists. It also answers the question whether or not antisemitic motifs were used in anti-Israel drawings.
