Title Building a Ukrainian Public Sphere in Odessa, 1905-1917
Summary This project deals with “nationalizing the public” with a special focus on the urban space. The thesis examines the specificity of the public sphere in Odessa, one of the biggest cities in the Russian Empire at the turn of the 20th century. The research aims to determine the level of interaction between the various national publics and to indicate their place in the cosmopolitan space of the city. The case study of the Ukrainian public sphere reveals the distinguishing features of the Odessan public sphere as well as its transformations during the years of the First Russian Revolution of 1905-1907 and thereafter.
