Title Refugees of the Greek Civil War: Politics and Ethnicity
Summary The purpose of this thesis is to fill the gap placing Greek Civil War refugees into a larger scheme, which is necessary if we want to understand the narrower national and local developments and, in doing so, to disentangle the intricate web of the reasons that led these people to leave their country. In case of both Greeks and Macedonians fleeing the war, the ethnical component was present, due to the peculiarity and historical legacy of the Balkan region. Thus, most of these people cannot be regarded as mere political refugees, without going into a deeper analysis of their background and conditions.
In the second section of my thesis I deal with the life of the refugees that ended up in Yugoslavia using Buljkes, an exclusively Greek refugees’ settlement, as a study case. Although the issue of their position in Greek-Yugoslav relations and in the Cold War confrontation has been tackled, a little effort has been made to describe the lives of these people during the exile. One of my aims was to depict the specific type of community that emerged in Buljkes and circumstances that surrounded its existence.
