Title JEWISH POLITICAL IDENTITY IN INTERWAR YUGOSLAVIA: Whose Flag to Hoist?
Summary This thesis has two aims. For one, it analyzes Jewish political presence in 1920s and 1930s Yugoslavia. I describe the relations inside the Jewish (i.e. Zionist or religious) circles and their different views on what it meant to be, for e.g., Croatian and Jewish as well as what was their interest in the mainstream political life of the country. I place the second aim, a more personal one, of this work into its conclusion. Namely, if we speak of the late 1920s/early 1930s as the “golden years” of some of Yugoslavia’s Jewry how come there is no or very little presence of this memory in contemporary Croatia, primarily the educational syllabus and collective memory – a memory of the people who were quintessential in shaping its character and appearance.
