Title DOES CORRUPTION RESTRAIN ECONOMIC GROWTH? THE CASE OF POST-SOCIALIST REPUBLICS
Summary This thesis analyzes the effects of corruption on economic growth in post-socialist societies. The relationship between corruption and growth is presented in a theoretical framework and supported by empirical analysis. Corruption is found to increase private investment given the prevalence of bureaucratic structure that slows down economic activities in post-socialist societies. The results also conclude that government efficiency, in particular the independence, effectiveness, and accountability of legislative and executive branches reduce the extent of corruption, while they substantially increase private investment in post-socialist republics. The results are robust to controlling for endogeneity by using the level of political competition as an instrument.
