Title Anti-Semitism in Serbia and its (Re)Invention after 1999
Summary This thesis aims at providing the possible explanations for the rise of anti-Semitism without Jews in Serbian post-conflict society, in the light of both the traditional Orthodox Christianity and modern conspiracy theories. These theories started being wide-spread among Serbian nationalists after the NATO bombardment of Serbia in 1999, followed by the democratic transition in 2000. The link between the emergence of the both Christian and other types of the right-wing organizatios, and the increasing number of reported anti-Semitic incidents in Serbia has been researched, as well as the fact that the official Serbian Orthodox Church, despite of its denial of anti-Semitism canonized a controversial religious figure that had been over fifty years of the communist rule considered as a clero-fascist, an anti-Semite and a hard-line nationalist.
These facts were investigated through the critical reading of the literature relevant for the subject, the historical overview of the anti-Semitic tradition of Serbia and the claims that it was not deeply-rooted, as well as the content analyses of the websites administered by contemporary right-wing organizations. The final stage of the research included individual interviews with the members of Christian right-wing movements.
