Title | Ethnic Chinese in Hungary: Inter and Intra-Ethnic Divides |
Summary | Ethnic Chinese have formed a special community in Hungary. Despite the fact that most local Hungarians have the experience of purchasing cheap goods from the Chinese market or eating at a Chinese restaurant, it remains mysterious how the Chinese community in Hungary is really like. There are many questions about Chinese people such as: what are the relations among Chinese migrants? Are they identical because they are all Chinese, or are there any divisions within such community? If there are divisions, how do such divisions affect the intro-ethnic relations within the Chinese community, and do they have any impact on the inter-ethnic relations between Chinese and local Hungarians? In this thesis, I will answer the above questions. In the research, I interviewed 40 Chinese in Budapest who provided the first-hand information according to the topic. I will use the result of the survey to proove that there are divisions within the Chinese community according to several criteria, and these divisions have impact on both inter-ethnic relations within the Chinese community and intro-ethnic relations between Chinese and local Hungarians. |
