Title | Forging Identity through Negotiation: The Case of the Contemporary Bosniak Nation |
Summary | This paper explores the issue why socio-political group of Bosnian Muslims changed their ethnonym from Muslims (written with capital M)[Muslimani] into Bosniaks [Bošnjaci] in the period of 1990-93. During the process of negotioation of the adequate national denomination several identity options were present in the public sphere of Bosnia and Herzegovina. They may be labelled as: ‘Muslim with capital M’, ‘Bosnian’, ‘Bosniak inclusive’, and ‘Bosniak exclusive’. The ‘Bosniak exclusive’ concept prevailed, due to the history of previous national projects in Bosnia and influence of Serbian and Croatian nationalisms, which resulted in failed legitimacy of the inclusive options and dominance of the ethno-religious concept of nation. |
