Title CONSTRUCTING THE IDEAL OF NOBLE YOUTH: CHRETIEN DE TROYES AND HIS INFLUENCES ON THIRTEENTH CENTURY EDUCATIONAL LITERATURE
Summary The core of this research deals with The Story of the Grail written by Chrétien de Troyes (died c. 1190). Along with the entertaining purposes this particular courtly romance conveyed educational ideals to a noble audience and gave guidelines on how to raise future knights and noble ladies. One of the main questions of this research is whether the values presented by Chrétien could have had their impact on the literature of the thirteenth century, in particular, the Parzival by the German poet Wolfram of Eschenbach and didactic literature written by Robert of Blois, Vincent of Beauvais, and Giles of Rome.
The first chapter discusses the role of the courtly poet and his audience, the need for education within the society of nobles and the appropriate teacher to conduct this education. The second chapter is dedicated to boys’ upbringing and educational values which one meets in the texts of the discussed authors. The third chapter discusses the educational aspects of girls’ upbringing.
My research shows that a number of educational aspects which one finds in Chrétien’s romance still proved to be relevant for later authors. All text share similar views on the education within noble society, although some of them are presented in a different literary form and bear other emphases on particular aspects. Some values, however, were relevant only for courtly literature which reveals the peculiarity of this source.
