Title | A Story Of Man's Great Love For His Fellow Man: Slash Fan Fiction, A Literary Genre |
Summary | Slash fan fiction is a "genre of fan stories positing homoerotic affairs between [...] protagonists" who are "expropriated male media characters", and which are "written almost exclusively by and for women". Slash is distinctive for its exploration of homoerotic relationships between men written from a female perspective. This thesis analyzes the genre with a particular focus on the process of creation of slash stories, including a stage-by-stage breakdown of the slash writing process. It also focuses on the properties of the slash text, and presents a description of the elements that create the essence of any slash story. This was performed through a close reading of both the source text and the slash text, with supplementary data collected through e-mail interviews with slash fans. Queer theory and narrative theory were applied as they lend themselves to the analysis and have not previously been thoroughly considered in this context. |
