| Title | Inside the Romanian Communist Party Apparatus: An Anatomy of the Institution of Censorship in the 1960s |
| Summary | This thesis examines the censorship operating in communist Romania in the 1960s from an institutional point of view. It aims to establish the legal framework which set up the censorship mechanisms and to provide an insight into the everyday activities of the censorship institution. As such, it places special emphasis on the personas of the censors, their background and their training. The thesis links censorship with the ideology of the regime by highlighting the importance of the concept of “state secret” in justifying the censoring activity. Finally, the examination of the relation between center and periphery provides further evidence concerning the dynamics of the institution’s activity and suggests the degree of its effectiveness |
