Title GHANA OIL DISCOVERY AND THE PARADOX OF THE RESOURCE CURSE: LESSONS FROM NIGERIA AND INDONESIA
Summary The thesis critically analysis the discourse on the resource curse that premise that countries rich in natural resources tends to underperform economically relative to countries that are poor in resources. It examines this debate in light of recent oil discovery in ghana and aims to verify whether ghana has the right institutional structures to overcome the curse. It draws lessons of best practices against bad practices from the experience of Nigeria and Indonesia and concludes that Ghana as a model of democratic governance stands to succeed in managing the oil resource well if it sustains these gains and pursues growth-led economic policies.
