Title | Promoting Student Mobility and Exchange in Hungary |
Summary | The establishment of the Erasmus program and the aims of the Bologna Process symbolize the escalating significance of student mobility and exchange in Europe. In spite of this, in Hungary, participation in study abroad programs and numbers of incoming foreign students remains considerably low—in particular regards to the Erasmus Program. In order to identify and examine the primary obstacles for study abroad and exchange in Hungary, this thesis will contextualize the national and institutional implementation of supranational policies and general trends. The study utilizes information from questionnaires and interviews with Hungarian students and officials from higher education and mobility institutions and agencies. The thesis finds that financial obstacles, dense curricula requirements, credit recognition difficulties, and the lack of assistance from the government for institutions to internationalize and market Hungarian higher education abroad contribute to low numbers of student mobility and exchange. In order to enhance study abroad and exchange in Hungary, the thesis advocates the re-organization of the credit system according to course intensity, increased efforts to promote foreign credit acceptance by faculties, the establishment of a mobility agency to help universities internationalize and market Hungarian higher education institutions, and the promotion of “capacity building” master’s programs for Hungarian students. |
