Title LEGAL ASPECTS OF THE INDEPENDENCE OF REGULATORY AUTHORITIES FOR THE BROADCASTING SECTOR
Summary The independence of broadcasting regulatory authorities is seen as a main precondition of a professional and credible regulatory process consequently, leading to the freedom of broadcasting. While there is a common consensus on the set of main legal standards which should contribute to authority’s independence, the research aims to explore how these safeguards are implemented and observed in different countries with a special focus on the US, the UK and Lithuania. The outcomes suggest firstly, that new tools are needed because the legal norms are not enough to achieve the independence because of their ineffectiveness to tackle influences by the industry. Secondly, there is a need to improve the existing legal frameworks by tailoring the existing legal safeguards to the objectives of credible and professional performance.
