Title Jewish heritage in the historical memory of East-European city dwellers: the case of Lviv in comparative context
Summary In this thesis I analyze post-communist politics of memory towards Jewish heritage and the way it is perceived by city dwellers in Lviv, Ukraine. Like many other cities in East-Central Europe it has undergone dramatic changes in the structure of population due to tragic historical events of XX century. Disinherited Jewish lieux de memoire became the spaces of contestation between different narratives, promoted by various actors and interest groups. I argue that despite the evidences of incorporation of multicultural narrative, the post-socialist decolonization of memory in Lviv has selective character with preference to commemorate the extermination of Jews rather then their long history in Galicia. Due to lack of alternative sources of memory this politics is being widely internalized by city dwellers and leads to ignorant and excluding attitude towards Jewish heritage as “gone forever”. I investigate these problems through triangulate approach by using different research methods.
