CEU eTD Collection (2010); Bitter, David: The Dissociation of Consciousness

CEU Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2010
Author Bitter, David
Title The Dissociation of Consciousness
Summary The thesis discusses whether the so called hidden observer phenomenon in hypnosis might constitute a genuine case of a dissociation of consciousness. While the notion of conscious dissociation seems both counter-intuitive and philosophically problemtaic, it is argued that, ultimately, all possible accounts of the hidden observer phenomenon will force us to let go of at least some of our intuitions concerning the unity and/or continuity of consciousness and/or the essentially phenomenal nature of pain.
