Title The Romanian Response to the Hungarian Revolution of 1956. The Decision-Making Process within the Romanian Workers' Party.
Summary Drawing on archival documents and recent scholarship, the paper contributes to understanding the role of Romania during and after the Hungarian Revolution of 1956. First, it provides an account of the decision-making process of the Romanian Workers' Party during the crisis created by the echoes of the Hungarian Revolution in Romania. Second, the paper tries to reconstruct and explain how the Hungarian Revolution affected Romania's domestic and foreign policies. The Hungarian Revolution also became a problem of foreign affairs that could have impacted the ideological stability of the Eastern bloc and endanger the security of the country. The findings of the study reveal that for Romania, at that certain point, the preservation of the regime was more important than a nationalist agenda.
