Title (Insider's) Perspective on LGBT Pride: Budapest Pride Case Study
Summary With Budapest Pride parades as the main focus, the intent of this thesis is to hint at newer ways to evaluating the discourses which surround the event. First, by avoiding instinctive hetero/homo social divide on the topic, I framed the conflicting discourses with broad distinctions of social bodies. Specifically, the “grotesque” (Bakhtin 1984) and the
“gothic” (Hurley 1997) help with the separation of supporting and opposing perspectives on
Pride. However, this clear supporting/opposing social group divide merge through discursive particularities of Pride. In this sense, the interviewing process of Budapest locals emphasized some of the internalized debates on Pride’s aim, necessity, and effectiveness. Lastly, through the emergence of inter LGBT community debates, the emphasis remains on reevaluating such discourses beyond the political/social (hetero/homo) social normatives. Therefore, this emphasis on Pride allows its discourses to merge with differentiating approaches on (sexual) minority organizational struggles.
