Title EXPLAINING DIVERGENCE IN GROWTH AMONG POST-COMMUNIST COUNTRIES: A PANEL DATA ANALYSIS
Summary In this thesis, a set of hypotheses as to explain the divergence in growth among post-Communist states is developed. The predictions are tested on a total of 28 countries situated in the following regions: Central Europe, the Balkans and the post-Soviet republics. The method used is pooled OLS with cross-section heteroskedasticity robust standard errors. The results suggest that this divergence is caused primarily by differences in both economic (such as initial economic potential, general and infrastructural reforms, price level growth, and foreign direct investment) and non-economic (such as political stability) factors, and reveal certain problems associated with measuring human capital for the sample countries.
