Title | Democratization in Sudan |
Summary | This thesis rests on the premise that for a democratization process to succeed there needs to be effectively functioning institutions that will help the country to transcend its past injustices, grantee a form of a democratic government and fulfillment of fundamental human rights. Sudan after the end of the civil war in the South and the signing of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement has started a democratization process. The democratization process is sustained with an Interim National Constitution containing a bill of rights and a democratic form of government. However and after the lapse of almost five years from signing the peace agreement some problematic aspects resulting from the political arrangement and constitutional gaps emerged. These problematic aspects do not only hinder the functioning of the democratic institutions but as well threaten the entire peace process that has ended the longest civil war in Africa. Thus this thesis is discussing these problematic aspects, why they are problematic and how their deficiencies will affect the democratization process. This and as well pin pointing the constitutional gaps and recommending alternatives and amendments that needs to take place. Some examples are brought from the South African experience as a best or better practice that can be adopted to overcome certain obstacles. By the discussions provided within this thesis it is providing a compact background of the Sudanese case history and contemporary issues and exposing areas that need further extensive research and elaboration. |
