Title | A Community Divided: The "Pro-Israel" Paradigm and American Jewry |
Summary | Since the State of Israel was founded in 1948, the notion of being "pro-Israel" has been an integral part of American Jewish organizational practice. However, the term "pro-Israel" is often taken for granted, and what characterizes the "pro-Israel" paradigm has undergone a transformation in recent years, as reflected in both discourse and practice. By examining the contours of the current debate over Israel in the organized American Jewish community, this paper will show that the "pro-Israel" label is inadequate for describing American Jewry's changing relation to Israel. |
