Title THE PROBLEMS OF OVER CROWDING IN NIGERIA: SOME LESSONS FROM SOUTH AFRICA AND AMERICA
Summary Over crowding poss serious challenges to Nigeria, South Africa, America as well as a global problem to both developed and developing countries. The root causes of over crowding is jurisdiction specific and varies from regions to regions. over crowding causes adverse effect both to the incarcerated person, the community and the society in general. Various countries have adopted different strategies to curb the increasing rate of prison over population but with no positive result as the strategies are not long term. There are both international and regional human rights instruments that provides specific provisions that addresses overcrowding related issues but however, they are not binding on member states and Nigeria is not equally bound to follow the provisions or standard stipulations. thus Nigeria has not complied with any of the provisions.
