Title | Rethinking the Welfare State: Social Protection, Economic Integration, and Transport |
Summary | This study reconsiders the effects of European integration on the welfare state. The analysis is centered on how the welfare state has historically performed its function and how European integration has changed this. Of concern is the maintenance of the social welfare status quo and the internal changes in the welfare state caused by the process of European integration. In a break with tradition, the focus of the research is on the social protection element of the welfare state rather than the ‘formal’ welfare state as it is commonly understood. For the purpose of assessing the effects of European integration on the social protection element of the welfare state, a case study of the transport sector—road and rail—is employed here. The analysis pays close attention to the process by which economic integration affects social protection and the overall welfare state implications of this. Through a combination of process-tracing and an evaluation of domestic responses, the research attempts to identify the driving force of integration. |
