Title The Impact of Corruption on FDI: The Case of Post-Socialist Europe
Summary Analyzing cross-sectional time-series, the present study evaluates whether the experience of post-Socialist states in Central and Eastern Europe, the Balkans and the Baltics confirms the oft-mentioned assumption that corruption lowers a country’s attractiveness for foreign direct investment. It is found that corruption, as measured by various perception-based indices, has indeed played an important role in the region as a determinant of attractiveness for foreign investors. At the same time, the study evaluates the changing marginal effect of corruption before and after EU accession, yet fails to find strong evidence pointing towards significant differences. Finally, the present study suggests that the scientific community should consider, in quantitative studies, the use of corruption indices in the form of a lagged variable.
