Summary This thesis is aimed to prove that the death penalty amounts to torture. The death penalty amounts to torture due to the fact that persons convicted for crimes that amounts to death penalty are not executed and will be in prison for a long time uncertain of their fate. They go through a mental torture of contemplating on the appointed time they will be executed, the mode of execution and the pains they will experience. This thesis will answer a few questions which are as follows:
A) Does the death penalty serve as a deterrent to crime?
B) Does the death penalty amounts to torture?
C) What is the best mechanism of applying the death penalty and will the abolition of the death penalty promotes human rights principles?
This research work will deal with the issue of torture as a human right violation as a result of the imposition of the death penalty in Sierra Leone and will be compared to the system operating in the United States of America.
