Title Different Love Stories in Different Cultures,A Comparative Study of Medieval Persian and French Chivalric Romances
Summary The current thesis focuses mainly on the comparative and analytical aspects of medieval French and Persian chivalric romances (composed in high Middle Ages) while their main highlights are considered gender and power issues. The formation of this study is based on the connections between certain characters and themes in the works of two authors – Abul-Qasim Ferdowsi and Chrétien de Troyes – who express their social and cultural concerns through writing. Although the intentions of these authors (e.g. documenting certain realities or depicting comprehensive images of their societies) may be different from each other, yet the outcomes of their works sometimes come close in nature in a way that an academic dialogue between them becomes possible. The aim of the current study is drawing attention to the less probed aspects of The Shahnameh via finding its corresponding themes with Chrétien’s romances and showing that by surpassing the presuppositions about a certain literary masterpiece the possibility of discovering and developing new ideas about it increases. The comparative study of medieval French and Persian romances familiarizes the reader (who is only aware of the global highlights of The Shahnameh) with other novel aspects of it.
