| Title | Witnesses to War: Observations of the Russo-Ottoman War in 1877-78 by Anglo-American Participants |
| Summary | This study seeks to explore the events of the Russo-Ottoman War of 1877-1878 in the Balkans and Armenia using a narrative of the events leading up to the fall of Plevna in December of 1877 and beyond. This work focuses on a comparison of the makeup, organization and performance of both the Russian and Ottoman armies as seen through the reports and journals of a number of British and American soldiers, diplomats and journalists who were present during the events. The cultural and social perspectives offered on Russian and Ottoman soldiers and officers by these observers are used in conjunction with the more technical aspects of weapon development and army organization. By taking this approach, this study is able to combine operational, political and popular accounts of the war into a more personal examination of the way it was fought. |
