| Title | The Precariousness of Generation in Understanding the Russian Intelligentsia of the Mid-Nineteenth Century |
| Summary | This study focuses on the so-called generation divide in the Russian intelligentsia during the mid-nineteenth century. In the historiographical analysis, I have come to the conclusion that older scholarship over-emphasized the importance of biological generation amongst older and younger members of Russia’s developing educated class. In my re-evaluation of historiographical and primary source information about the so-called generation gap in Russia’s intelligentsia in the mid-nineteenth century, I have come to the conclusion that the gap largely is due to class differences. I read through extensive issues of Sovremennik, Kolokol, examined published letters of various intelligentsia members, and analyzed other important documents for my purposes. What I have concluded through my research is that the alleged “generation gap” between intelligentsia members during the 1850’s till the beginning of the 1860’s before the large emergence of Young Russia was not based on age differences but on class differences. |
