Title EMOTIONS AND HEALTH: A STUDY OF "PSYCHOSOMATIC PATTERNS" IN GERMAN MEDIEVAL REGIMINA SANITATIS
Summary This thesis examines the ways in which accidentia animi (emotions) were believed to affect the body in medieval medical discourse. The specific genre of regimen sanitatis literature is analyzed with the aim of establishing which particular emotions were thought to lead to particular diseases and unhealthy states (“psychosomatic” patterns), as well as other patterns and peculiarities of the genre. As selected primary source material I use eight compositions in German vernacular, which are supplemented by other treatises from other areas and in other languages. In this thesis I argue that accidentia animi deserve being examined in detail, going beyond simply enumerating those mentioned; the sources show that emotions form a certain system, where certain emotions are have a particularly pronounced negative/positive effect on the body, as well as there are a number of ways in which emotional states and bodily health interact.
