| Summary | The thesis deals with the emergence and significance of ethnography and folklore studies in Hungarian Jewish scholarship through folklore publications in the Magyar Zsidó Szemle. After introducing key terms, like folklore, ethnography and looking over the overall structure of Jewish intellectual activity in Hungary, it goes on with an analysis of the emergence of the term ethnography within traditional Jewish folklore. As it looks into the role of this development it identifies the re-definition of community in a modernizing era as well as an attempt to form a coherent narrative based on European (and mainly German) conceptions of a “universal ethnicity” that does not confront with national or religious identity. Although the creation of the “ethnographic” discourse within Hungarian Jewish intelligentsia was successful, the Szemle itself lost its importance in the process for a time in 1919. The study concludes that the folklore section of the Magyar Zsidó Szemle was an influential part of the Central European Jewish folklore studies and ethnography thus making the Rabbinical Seminary of Budapest one of the field’s recognized institutions. |
