Title Labor identity of migrant workers in South Korea
Summary In 2003, the Korean government started sweeping deportations of undocumented migrant workers, justifying them with the upcoming Employment Permit System (EPS) that they were planning to enforce; a system which despite other promises still offered very limited rights to the migrant workers it was to target . The government’s extensive deportations eventually pushed four migrant workers into suicide from July to November 2003 amidst rising fears of economic difficulties and crack downs. In opposition to the actions of this government, around 70 migrant workers and 200 civil society group members and students ended up gathering at the Myongdong Catholic Cathedral on November 15th 2003 to stage a sit-in strike. Their protest came after many abuses and deportations led by the Korean government, which has not presented appropriate policies but just suppressed migrant workers since the mid-1980s. The protesters’ claims were most importantly ‘to stop the deportations and to legalize undocumented migrant workers’.
