| Title | Educating Elite in a Contested Borderland: A Case Study of Kiev Institute for Noble Girls |
| Summary | Relying on the experience of Kiev Institute for noble girls as a case study, this research proceeds along two major lines. First, it shows the collisions of the nationality policy of the 19th Romanov Empire in its Western borderlands, yielding thereby to the recent scholarship, which has undermined the assumption that it was uniformly repressive and/or consistent. By the same token, this thesis reassesses the history of elite schooling in the 19th Romanov Empire, stating that highly prestigious both male and female boarding schools, explicitly destined for the traditional social elites, were a part of the state’s image and self-representation as a noble one. In other words, the study argues that even at the turn of the century, when the Empire was indeed modernizing, it remained noble in its essence, of which elite schools were a significant part. |
