Title Do Labor Market Conditions Affect Childbearing Behavior?
Summary The question of the thesis is whether labor market conditions affect childbearing behavior. I am using a panel data set with 29 OECD countries and 11 years to analyze if the change in the unemployment rate has an effect on next year's fertility rate. The preferred model specification finds a relatively small and negative, but statistically significant effect. In particular, a one percentage point increase in the unemployment rate decreases the fertility rate by approximately 0.005 children. This also implies that in the developed countries the expectations about future well-being and the opportunity cost of having a child do, in fact, play role in the decision about having a child. Thus, labor market conditions do affect childbearing behavior.
