Title | Asserting an Identity: Explaining Paradox of "Strategic Partnership" between Iran and Russia |
Summary | Iranian-Russian relations after the Collapse of the Soviet Union have been characterized by different, often contradicting terms. While the most common expression used by the two countries and, in particular, by Iran is the term “strategic partnership”, during the past two decades Islamic Republic and Russian Federation have had disagreements upon numerous issues within the different spheres of their bilateral relations. The objective of this paper is to give an explanation to the contradicting behavior of Moscow and Tehran, while dealing with each other. The paper will highlight the importance of identity factor previously ignored in the studies on Iranian-Russian relations. Moreover, it will emphasize the importance of Iranian identity for studying the paradox of “strategic partnership” between Iran and Russia. In order to accomplish these tasks, the paper will separately discuss Iran's and Russia's contemporary self-perception. Further on the basis of the findings, made from the analysis of the roles, prescribed by two countries to themselves, conclusions will be drawn concerning the Russia’s attitude to Iran and the vice versa. |
