| Title | Instances of the Romanian People's Democracy State in May 1st Enterprise in Ploiesti (1948-1953): Ideas and Practices |
| Summary | The first chapter of my thesis represents a theoretical excursus into state theories and issues of domination in Soviet-inspired state systems. I discuss my understanding of the totalitarian and revisionist “paradigms” and explain my approach to state-formation and power in The People’s Republic of Romania, as well as the specifics of the “workingclass,” my choice of enterprise and the two components of infrastructural power that I further elaborate on in chapters two and three: economic and ideological. The second chapter discusses the viability of central economic planning, the individualization resulting from the wage system legislation of 1948 and 1949, the material and alimentary supplies of industrial centers and the main provisions of the monetary reform of 1952, with a focus on the increase in the work norms (all this with an empirical focus on workers in “May 1st” enterprise in particular and on the surrounding enterprises in general). The third chapter tackles the ideological aspects of the Romanian state’s power and their dissemination in the enterprise through propaganda/agitation, as well as the workers’ use of them. I will bring into discussion the impact of new institutions such as Socialist contests, wall newspapers, workers’ clubs and Red Corners, and the dissemination of legislation, with the same empirical focus as in chapter 2 (due to the relevance of the examples, I also added several instances from enterprises in Bucharest). |
