| Title | THE EAST AND WEST, SEPARATE BUT EQUAL? THE AVANT-GARDE SEARCHES FOR A NEW CULTURAL SPACE IN INTERWAR ROMANIA |
| Summary | My major contribution to the study of Romanian interwar history and the history of the avant-garde was using symbolical geography, that is, the real and imagined projection of perception of borders and the effect this had on the Romanian artists. I have learned that due to the many artistic influences that come across the borders through both time and space, the artists are forced to participate in a contradictory avant-garde. The literary motifs they use are constantly conflicting, and there is a continuous juxtaposition between the need to modernize and the pull and weight of the traditional environment (social, cultural, political) which surrounds them. I started out treating the avant-garde as a separate segment of society but what I have discovered is interesting- not only were the avant-gardists trying to find their identity, but the confusion about their own identity went on a deeper level, and it was symptomatic of the Romanian interwar society at large. The Romanian avant-guardists were conflicted. |
