Title Is the European Union becoming a better place to live? Analyzing the convergence of life quality indicators
Summary This paper tests for σ - convergence in the enlarged European Union of a wide range of life quality indicators, including life expectancy, air quality, school enrollment, women employment and the number of internet users. To be able to detect the presence or absence of this, a set of econometric techniques are used, namely coefficient of correlation analysis and panel regressions. The study first briefly investigates whether or not GDP per capita converges across the selected countries over time, then it turns to the issue of living standard convergence and its relation to the level of macroeconomic indicators. The results differ depending on the selected time frame of the analysis. They suggest that all indicators tend to move towards a common value in the period of 1990-2011, however their pace and level of dispersion differs considerably.
