| Title | THE HUNGARIAN NATIONAL THEATER 1945-1955 AN ANALYSIS OF PERSONAL NARRATIVES |
| Summary | The subject of the thesis is the Hungarian National theater and its relationship to politics in Hungary from 1945 until the theatrical year 1953/1954. A significant literature exists on the subject of the National Theater but this project will adopt an innovative approach by taking as its chief focus of interest a series of autobiographical memoirs of key individuals within the institution. The autobiographies of Bálint Magyar, head secretary of the National Theater; Hilda Gobbi, actress; and Gyula Háy, playwright. I am interested in the small steps, compromises and decisions they personally made, and as these are retrospective texts, and are relevant regarding their self-reflexive and subjective, even self-justifying identity construction, the question to be asked is what did these authors find important to mention, how do they present, how do they ‘explain’ themselves, especially in regard of the investigated time period and their relation to the prevailing political system. � 9;Methodologica lly the thesis will combine a close reading of these primary texts with a contextualization within the relevant secondary literature relating to the political background and the institution of the National Theater. The study of autobiographies written by appreciated members of the society provided an insight into the informalities of the otherwise rigid system, and on the cultural political values in practice. |
