Title Freedom of Information Law in Nigeria; Challenges of Implementation
Summary This thesis will focus on the various challenges facing the implementation of the just passed Freedom of Information Law in Nigeria. Though the law has been passed, there remain some other challenges which need to be overcome for its effective implementation. The challenges include the issue of creation, keeping, maintenance and record organisation, the culture of secrecy that pervades the public service, the process of ensuring the effective review of existing civil service rules to make them compliant with the new law, absence of independent and strong oversight mechanism and the various misconceptions about the law. To address the challenges, one of the questions addressed is, if there is enough awareness and understanding of the Freedom of Information law and its huge potential? This question is important because it will address the issue of the huge misconceptions surrounding the law and will also draw attention to the huge potentials in having such a law and the benefits that are therein for Nigerians.
