Title Negotiating power through laughter: women stand-up comedians in Brazil
Summary The boom of stand-up comedy in Brazil, in the 2000's, has brought about a handful of succesful women who are defying the stereotype that states that women are unfunny or less funny than men. However, an analysis of their comic performances and of their self-evaluation of their rutines and careers (provided in semi-structured interviews) shows that these women work in a context of negotiation of power and space. They have to insert themselves in a male-oriented genre and business. This results in a "two steps forward, threesteps back" attitude in relation to the combat of sexism.
