| Title | Siberia: Colony, Krai, or Myth? Expressions of Regional Consciousness in the late Soviet Press, 1988-1991 |
| Summary | This thesis investigates the volatile time period of the late Soviet Union to examine movements towards a developing regional consciousness in Siberia. Using the reformed and emergent press found between 1988-1991, this study has sought out ways in which residents of the Krasnoiarsk krai and Novosibirsk oblast conceived of their place in the Soviet Union as Siberians. Splitting the frame of analysis between official and unofficial periodicals, this work analyzes the nuanced differentiations in Siberian narratives—cultural, political, and otherwise. This text engages in both observing regional discourses and understanding which forms they took. The thesis argues that, despite the unstable time period in which journalists and informal organizations operated, regionalist discussions still managed to enter the public spheres of Krasnoiarsk and Novosibirsk. |
