| Title | Funeral Ceremonies and Decorations of the Hungarian Aristocracy in 18th Century Habsburg Monarchy. A Case Study of the K??rolyi Family |
| Summary | My thesis deals with the issue of the funeral ceremonies and decorations of the aristocracy during the 18th century, using the example of one of the most prominent exponents of the Hungarian aristocratic tradition, the Károlyi family. The thesis includes three major chapters which are divided in subchapters. The first chapter offers an overview of the development of the funeral rite in relation with the changing attitude towards death and to the manifestations of personal representation of the deceased in funeral traditions and practices in Western and Central Europe from the Middle Ages until the end of the 17th century. I highlighted some general phenomena in the development of the funeral rite that manifested in East-Central Europe as well, despite the fact that we cannot talk about direct influence. The next chapter focuses on the funeral culture of the upper social classes in Hungary and Transylvania in the 16th and 17th centuries, preparing in this way my personal research topic. The last and the most important and detailed chapter embodies the results of my personal research concerning the funerals of the Károlyi family in the 18th century from the viewpoint of personal representation and cult. The three major stages of the funerals, the laying out in state of the body of the deceased, the funeral procession and the burial ceremony correspond to the three major subchapters of my thesis. I analyzed how the social, political and personal representation of the deceased manifested by means of the funeral procession, liturgy, orations and funeral decoration. In the last subchapter focused on the most important elements of the funeral decoration of the Károlyi family, which included the castra doloris, the coffins, funeral portraits, flags, emblems and funeral coats of arms. |
