Title | The Belt in Late-Medieval Hungary A Comparison of Archaeological and Pictorial Evidences |
Summary | In this master’s thesis I hope to contribute to material culture studies, or putting it another way, I intend to borrow its approach to understand better a certain type of object and the roles it played in the society as a personal article and symbol. In the Hungarian research pictorial sources are far not exploited properly from the viewpoint of material culture. Visual representations are frequently used as illustrations only and their source value is not appreciated enough, however certain examples of them are rather talkative, especially regarding costume and fashion. Here I chose mural paintings from late-medieval Hungary to show when and how those visual sources could help to scholars to reconstruct and date particular objects, and to analyze their role in the everyday life. In clothing belts are especially detailed and well-examinable accessories in mural paintings. Their decoration, shape, length and situation on the body could be an indicator of the current fashion, and all these elements could serve as baselines for dating the fresco or a depicted artifact. I dedicated my thesis to the close reading of late-medieval belts, I examine each of their variants depicted and I compare my observations with the other scholars’ results drawn from the archaeological evidences. |
