Title Jews and Non-Jews in a West Hungarian Township under the Interwar 'Christian Course', with Special Reference to Local Press Reports
Summary The thesis presents a small Jewish Community that had to live in a gradually growing antisemitic environment in the interwar years in a Western Hungarian town called Kőszeg. It investigates the characteristics and changes of antisemitism in local level, how the gradual exclusion of Jews happened in practice. The main focus is on the analysis of the local weekly called Kőszeg és Vidéke in the period between 1909 and 1939, hence we are able to compare pre-war to interwar years and also investigate the question of continuity of antisemitism in a micro level. Although the Jewish Community of Kőszeg fulfilled the requirements of assimilation by the turn of the 20th century, local antisemites did not accept them as true Magyars. The deep examination of the city’s society helps us understand better on the one hand, the motivations of antisemites and on the other hand, the reactions of Jews to a changed atmosphere. The thesis deals with the question of assimilation and antisemitism on a local level under the given political, economic and social circumstances, nevertheless can give us an impression about the anti-Jewish atmosphere of interwar Hungary that finally led to the mass destruction of Hungarian Jews.
