| Title | Medium of Change: Criticism and Literature in the Early Modernization of Hungarian Theatre in the 1890s |
| Summary | The last decade of the nineteenth-century is an important and interesting period of the Hungarian theatre history going through a process of modernization. After an overview of the early history of Hungarian, especially Budapest theatres, the modernization process is discussed from the view of theatre criticism and literature. An outstanding role in this development was played by two literary weeklies, A Hét and Új idők. The authors of these journals had a wide outlook on the artistic and literary tendencies in Europe especially in France and Germany. This accentuated interest met a vivid and young theatrical life in Budapest refreshed also by the cultural transfer by visiting troupes. In this environment the permanent theatres of Budapest made the Hungarian audience acquainted with naturalism, symbolism and Neo-Romantics. Hungarian playwrights, who in the same time wrote critiques about these plays themselves, wrote dramas in these new styles. The outstanding members of this so-called first generation were Zoltán Ambrus, Sándor Bródy and Tamás Kóbor. The achievements of this first generation were developed further by even younger theatre-goers who after writing critiques, later formed their own theatrical society, the Thália Társaság. The progressive reforms were appeared in the work of this society with the new interpretations of performances and plays alongside with new productions, using up the traditions of the first wave of modernization and new Western ideologies of theatre. They were the second generation of Hungarian modernization, more progressive and initiative in theatre and critic alike. This mutualism was abruptly terminated by the First World War with the shock of the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy. |
