Title Promotion of the Right to Dignity of Person: The Need for Criminalization of Torture in Nigeria
Summary Nigeria is a party to the United Nations Convention against Torture, yet acts of torture are prevalent. Torture occurs within detention centers. While the average Nigerian is ignorant of his/her rights, law enforcement officers claim lack of equipment as defence for use of torture. The African human rights mechanism which should serve to check human rights violation by member state, has a Committee to Prevent Torture that has non-enforceable powers. Due to the situation and menace of torture, this research calls for the criminalization of torture in Nigeria. it looks as the practice of torture and the interviews by victims. It calls for change through advocacy and assistance of victims. It also calls for training and re-training of law enforcement officers.
